What I did: I was curious about what was going on in the middle-east as it is very chaotic in the middle east, so I went to search about what was happening there.

What I learnt:
I learnt new words like,
sanctioned-given approval
permissible-allowed
authenticity- the quality of how original the object is
undisclosed-not revealed

Summary: During a raid in eastern Syria, US forces found a document that said ISIS, a terrorist group, allows people in their territory to take organs from an apostate even if they are alive to be transplanted to a Muslim's body to save the Muslim even if the donor would die. Therefore, there are speculations that ISIS does organ harvesting and trafficking to make a profit.

What I did: I wanted to find out about hacking as many people use the web, so I went to search about it on the straits times.

What I learnt: It is very easy to let a hacker hack a whole network.
There are many ways to defend your own devices from hackers like a firewall.
A firewall prevents unauthorised access to a network that may contain malware.
Another way is "sandboxing" which allows programmes from unknown websites restricted access on the computer but will the programme will be blocked if it is known to be hostile.
Another way is to use antibot technologies, which examines the actions of possible malware.

Summary: Hackers now have more ways than before to prevent malware from being detected, such as disguising their harmful programs as a friendly one, programming their malware to stop finding information when an antivirus programme is scanning the device. No approach is foolproof. We have to keep updating our anti-malware systems.

Source:http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/obesity-also-rising-in-singapore

What I did: I heard that obesity was rising in Singapore and found an article about it.

What I learnt: More people in Singapore are getting obese.
Getting obese increases the chances of getting chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer. Asians are more likely to get chronic diseases at a lower BMI compared to others.

Summary: Obesity is a problem worldwide and in Singapore.More people in Singapore have been getting obese. In 2010, 11 per cent of Singaporean adults aged between 18 and 69 were obese, up from 7 percent in 2004.The main causes of obesity are technology and cheap food, which makes people more inactive, burning lesser calories than the calories taken in will cause obesity.

What I did: The weather was feeling very warm, and I decided to find out about global warming.

What I learnt: Temperatures on Earth are rising. The global heat wave is strengthened by a usually strong El NiƱo phenomenon, which released hot water across the Pacific ocean and had been accused of droughts in Africa.

Summary: Global warming will not stop soon, and April 2016 was the hottest month globally. The global temperature of land and sea was 1.11 deg C warmer in April than the average temperature for the month during the 1951-1980 period based on the report.Carbon dioxide levels have reached 400 parts in a million at Cape Grim.171 nations have committed to try to keep global warming at 2 degrees Celsius.

Source:http://www.straitstimes.com/world/europe/global-life-expectancy-rises-study-finds

What I did: I was curious about finding out how long people lived and searched about it.

What I learnt: The global life expectancy has increased, but many are living being sick for a longer time.General health has improved worldwide, mostly due to progress against infectious diseases.Japan had the highest life expectancy at 73.4 years, and Lesotho had the lowest life expectancy at 42 years.

Summary: Some countries life expectancies declined, and some increased, but overall, the average life expectancy increased. The study found many stark differences between countries which have the highest and lowest life expectancies respectively.Singapore, Andorra, Iceland, Cyprus, Israel, France, Italy, South Korea and Canada are some countries, after Japan, where people can expect to live longer, healthier lives.
